Microcement Floors

Microcement Floors: Applications, Types and Advantages.

Microcement floors are one of the most widespread continuous floorings globally, offering decorative opportunities for both indoor and outdoor use. This coating can be applied to kitchen floors, bathroom floors, terrace floors, etc.

What is Microcement?

Microcement is a decorative cement-based coating used to renovate all types of spaces without major construction. With a thickness of less than 3 mm, it is applied over existing surfaces without removing the old covering.

In addition to its aesthetic finish, microcement is functional. It does not crack and is resistant to foot traffic, scratches, running water, sunlight, and impacts.

Benefits of Microcement for Floors

  • Microcement floors do not raise the floor level significantly due to their minimal thickness of 2 to 3 mm.
  • It provides a continuous surface with no expansion joints or seams, allowing the entire floor to be renewed in one piece.
  • It adheres to any material without needing to remove the existing support, avoiding debris and heavy renovations.
  • It is UV resistant and has good thermal resistance.
  • Microcement floors offer excellent resistance to traffic, abrasion, and household cleaning products.
  • Each microcement floor is unique due to the variety of colors and finishes available.
  • It can be used for both indoor and outdoor flooring, such as terraces and pool surrounds.

How to Apply Microcement: Step-by-Step

  1. Clean the Surface: Ensure the floor to be covered with microcement is in perfect condition. Clean it of dust, stains, grease, or any other particles, and check the base for moisture. If needed, apply a moisture-blocking primer.
  2. Primer Application: Once the surface is clean, apply a primer to enhance adhesion between the existing support and the new microcement floor. Use a primer suitable for the surface’s absorbency.
  3. First Base Layer: Apply the first non-pigmented base layer of microcement. Use fiberglass mesh to help minimize cracks over time. After application, sand the surface.
  4. Second Base Layer: Once the surface is completely dry, apply a pigmented base layer. Choose the desired color for the continuous floor, and once covered, sand the microcement floor.
  5. Two Finishing Layers: Apply two finishing layers of pigmented microcement. Depending on the finish and slip resistance desired, use medium or coarse microcement. We recommend two coats of Satine’s microcement for optimal results.
  6. Surface Protection: Finally, protect the microcement floor by applying two coats of a pre-sealer followed by two coats of a top sealer. This protects, waterproofs, and can provide an anti-slip finish.

Colors for Microcement Floors

Microcement is a versatile option that offers a wide range of colors, adapting to various styles and environments. White is a popular choice due to its minimalist style, bringing a sense of spaciousness and brightness to spaces. On the other hand, gray is ideal for those seeking an industrial look, adding a modern and elegant aesthetic. In addition to these neutral colors, there is an extensive palette that includes warm, cool, and earthy tones, allowing users to customize their space according to their preferences and desired ambiance.

Cleaning, Care, and Maintenance

Microcement floors are known for their low maintenance. To keep them in optimal condition, it is recommended to clean occasionally with water and mild detergent. It is important to use specialized biodegradable products to preserve the floor’s appearance and prolong its lifespan. In high-traffic areas, a combination of specific products should be used to ensure proper care and maintain the floor in excellent condition.

Care and Maintenance

To add durability and shine to microcement, protective waxes should be used. Wax application should be done only after the floor is completely clean and has been sealed for at least 15 days. The frequency of waxing will depend on the floor’s use: in high-traffic areas, it is recommended to reapply wax every two months, while in residential spaces, every six months is sufficient. This routine will help keep the surface in good condition and extend its lifespan.

Tips to Avoid Problems

During the first few days after applying microcement, it is crucial to ensure adequate ventilation in the area to allow the material to cure properly. Avoid walking on the floor for at least a week to prevent compromising the finish. Additionally, it is important to prevent spills and heavy furniture movement during this initial period to ensure a perfect and durable finish. Following these recommendations will help avoid problems and ensure that the microcement floor remains in excellent condition over time.
