Santiago Soro with his sculpture ‘Atrevida.’
It is a solid bronze orange peel, in which Santiago wanted to honor the bold idea from 1882 of bringing the first merchant ship to the port of Burriana to load oranges with oxen and by hand out to sea, destined for London.
In the 1100s during King Alfonso’s reign, Buriena is Burriana. ‘Buris’ from Latin means ‘curved part of the plow,’ and ‘Ana’ from Greek means ‘suitable.’ Burriana means ‘suitable land, fertile land,’ which is why the quality of its crops since then and the efforts of its people, along with the construction of the Burriana port to meet the demand, brought prosperity for more than half a century. The first ship loaded with oranges would leave the port of Burriana on December 11, 1928. That same year, Burriana would also plant its first falla in Plaza de la Merced.
